Mahender Sharma
Dr. Mahender Sharma is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA). With over two decades of experience in the energy sector, he is committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions through his leadership in spearheading the development of renewable energy initiatives and implementation of modern energy technologies and infrastructure nationwide. These efforts contribute to the growth of Guyana’s bourgeoning low-carbon economy. Dr. Sharma’s primary focus areas include solar power, hydroelectricity, wind energy, bio-energy, energy conservation and energy efficiency.
Throughout his career, Dr. Sharma has held several esteemed positions related to sustainable development, environmental management, and energy transformation. He has served as a Director on the Board of the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE), and he has been a member of the Board of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He has also chaired the Board of President’s College.
Dr. Sharma is currently serving as the Chair of the Environment Assessment Board and is a Director on the Board of the Guyana Power and Light, Inc. He represents Guyana as the National Focal Point for the International Solar Alliance and the Latin American and Caribbean Energy Organization (OLADE).
He has also contributed to several national, regional, and international publications on renewable energy expansion, low-carbon development, climate change mitigation and energy security.
Dr. Sharma holds a Doctor of Management in Organization Leadership from the University of Phoenix, a Master of Science in Energy and Environment from the University of Calgary and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Guyana.
